MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL CHAIRPERSON KENAS
The number 10 is the first digit with the zero and apparently endows one with extra vitality. KENAS is 10! On behalf of the Board of Directors, we congratulate KENAS for a decade of service. I was appointed Chairperson of KENAS Board in September 2018; and glad to be part of this journey that began with the legal establishment of KENAS in 2009.
Our mission “to provide greater confidence in accredited conformity assessment services to businesses, government, regulators, consumers and the public” is a commitment that we continuously aim to achieve through the internationally recognized accreditation and training offerings. Furthermore, we are mandated to promote accreditation to facilitate regional and international trade. This is anchored by the Mutual Recognition Arrangements with the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC) and the International Accreditation Forum (IAF) and the African Accreditation Cooperation (AFRAC).
We have made strides in increasing our customer service and international processes, but we aim to spur this to higher heights in the next 10 years. KENAS started off as a lean organization with 9 staff and only 12 accredited clients to 34 staff and 110 accredited clients. KENAS is a pioneer in accrediting bodies beyond borders to Uganda, Tanzania, Sudan, Gambia and India. We are the leading accreditation body for conformity assessment bodies in Eastern Africa. KENAS continues to chart new territory – with the support of the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Cooperatives – through its deepening relationship with various stakeholders and other regulatory bodies. The anticipated assent of the Accreditation Bill will take our business to newer heights and put Kenya on the global map. It will be an opportunity to ensure KENAS is well understood and trickles to all sectors of the economy. Children are excited about their milestone birthdays, especially double digits, the number 10. It is a stage to grow wings and soar.
As we start this new phase in KENAS, we aim to be a catalyst for the transformation of business practices. We aim to ensure that we safeguard the health of Kenyan citizens as accreditation of more medical testing laboratories, inspection bodies, certification bodies, general testing and calibration laboratories to the highest standards is the key. It will help us ensure global acceptance and competitiveness of our goods and services. To our esteemed local clients, stakeholders and partners, my sincere appreciation enabling our decade of existence. You are the reason we are double digits today! The KENAS Board of Directors remains committed to support KENAS continued success.
